In the spring of 1979, several representatives from Alpha Phi International headquarters in Evanston visited Elmhurst College to determine if there was the need for another national sorority on campus. They decided to begin a colony at the college in March, and the initial step was to pin thirteen enthusiastic women as pledges of Alpha Phi.

In late September the colony was able to pin 22 new members. The colony now reached the minimum of 30 members and were able to begin formal pledge classes, moving toward the goal of obtaining an Alpha Phi charter. Alpha Phi International then set February 2, 1981 as the installation date for the Zeta Xi Chapter of Alpha Phi.

Alpha Phi continues to prosper on the Elmhurst College campus thanks to the members, alumnae, parents, and the chapter advisors who willingly give their guidance and support.

Founded by ten women at Syracuse University, Alpha Phi is now one of the largest and oldest fraternities in North America.
Our founder's were women with brave hearts that were filled with a noble purpose and with eyes that saw clearly into the future. These were the Original Ten, the Founders of Alpha Phi. Pursuing their studies in a male-dominated environment, these women had a pressing need for friends who could sympathize with each other's problems and support each others' aspirations. On September 18, 1872, these ten women initiated themselves into Alpha Phi.
